Se non la posso avere io, non l’avrà nessuno. Solo con me può essere felice, solo con me è al sicuro. Ma l’avete guardato in faccia quell’idiota con cui sta assieme adesso? Quello non sa nemmeno scrivere il suo nome, si capisce lontano un miglio che non hanno nulla in comune. Lo fa solo per ingelosirmi, perché è in cerca di conferme da parte mia. Una volta bastava qualche ceffone ben assestato per farla tornare in sé. Non mi interessa dell’ordinanza del giudice: nessuno mi terrà lontano da mia moglie. È ora di passare alle maniere forti.

Si moi je peux pas l’avoir, personne ne l’aura. Il n’y a qu’avec moi qu’elle peut être heureuse, qu’elle est en sécurité. Mais vous l’avez bien regardé cet imbécile avec qui elle s’affiche à présent. Il sait même pas écrire son nom. On voit à un kilomètre qu’ils n’ont rien en commun. Elle fait ça uniquement pour me rendre jaloux, pour me tester. A une époque, il suffisait de quelques gifles bien placées pour lui faire entendre raison. J’en ai rien à foutre des décisions de justice : personne ne me tiendra éloigné de ma femme. Il est temps de passer à la manière forte.

Ho solo detto la verità, mica le ho infilato io la corda intorno al collo. L’ho vista insieme a quell’altra che si baciavano nel parcheggio scambiatore della stazione. È inaudito che una donna sposata con figli abbia una relazione con una ragazzina. Con un uomo avrei anche potuto accettarlo e fare finta di niente, di questi tempi è all’ordine del giorno, si sa. Poi la voce si è sparsa, succede, ma non sono andata in piazza col megafono. Lo sapevano tutti, bastava guardarla per capire com’era veramente. Alla fine, hanno ceduto i nervi, poveraccia. Sarebbe successo comunque, prima o dopo. Non è colpa mia.

Whoever heard of a married woman with children having an affair with a twenty something year old? If it had been a man I could have accepted it and pretended nothing was happening. That sort of thing happens all the time now, they say. Then the word got out but it wasn’t me who went around with a loudspeaker. Everyone knew. You only had to look at her to see what she really was. In the end, her nerves went, poor thing. But it would have happened anyway, sooner or later. It wasn’t my fault.

J’ai seulement dit la vérité, c’est tout de même pas moi qui lui ai passé la corde au cou. Je l’ai vue avec l’autre là qui se bécotaient sur le parking de la gare. C’est quand même incroyable qu’une femme mariée avec des enfants sorte avec une gamine de vingt ans. Avec un homme, j’aurais encore pu l’accepter et fermer les yeux : ça arrive tout le temps aujourd’hui, y paraît. Mais un jour, forcément, ça s’est su. Mais c’est pas moi qui suis allée le crier sur tous les toits. Tout le monde savait. Il suffisait de la regarder pour comprendre à qui on avait à faire. A la fin, ses nerfs ont lâché, la pauvre fille. Mais ça serait arrivé un jour où l’autre, de toute façon. C’est pas ma faute.

Mio nipote non è un assassino. È quella lì che l’ha tirato matto. Nessuno sa che cosa significhi stare assieme ad un’arpia che si sente in diritto di puntualizzare tutto, che ti ipoteca la vita. Alessio è sempre stato un ragazzo introverso, timido e tanto sensibile. Quando è arrivata Debora non ci pareva vero che anche uno come lui potesse essere felice. Dopo un po’ che erano sposati deve essere successo qualcosa, non saprei dire cosa di preciso. Una sera li ho invitati tutti e due a cena e ho visto coi miei occhi che lui era agitato, a tratti irascibile. Non era più il mio Alessio. Lei deve averlo manipolato al punto tale che lui non si è riconosciuto più, povera creatura, e le ha fatto quello che le ha fatto. Quella gli ha rovinato la vita.

Alex a toujours été un jeune homme introverti, timide et très sensible. Quand Deborah est arrivée, on se demandait même comment quelqu’un comme lui pouvait être aussi heureux. ll a dû se passer quelque chose peu de temps après leur mariage. Je ne sais pas quoi exactement. Un soir, je les ai invités à dîner tous les deux et j’ai vu de mes propres yeux à quel point il était agité et irritable. Ce n’était plus mon Alex. Elle avait dû tellement le manipuler qu’il ne savait même plus qui il était, le pauvre petit, et il a fait ce qu’il a fait. Elle a gâché sa vie.

All’esame di analisi mi ha lasciato copiare tutto il compito. Quasi non mi conosceva, ma quando si è accorta che ero in panico totale, mi ha allungato le soluzioni senza battere ciglio. Michela è una delle ragazze più intelligenti che abbia mai conosciuto. Intuitiva, precisa: le viene tutto spontaneo. La cosa bella è che non se la tira, ti fa sentire a tuo agio anche stai chiaramente uno scalino sotto. Una volta, dopo lezione, ha ricevuto una telefonata strana. È stata in silenzio tutto il tempo e quando ha messo giù aveva gli occhi lucidi. Poi, un po’ in imbarazzo, mi ha detto che era il suo ex, che aveva problemi e che sperava gli avrebbero trovato presto la cura giusta. Si erano lasciati e aveva perso la testa. La cercava ad ogni ora del giorno e della notte. La perseguitava. Michela aveva paura, si capiva.
Oggi sono due anni che è in coma neurovegetativo. Dicono che l’abbia ridotta così con un bastone.

She let me copy her whole calculus exam. She hardly knew me, but when she realised I was panicking, she passed me the answers without batting an eyelid. Michela is one of the brightest girls I’ve ever met. Her hunches are bang on, she’s neat. She understands everything naturally. The nice thing is that she isn’t big- headed. Even if you’re clearly not as clever as her, she makes you feel all right. Once, after class, she got a weird phone call. She listened in silence and, when the call finished, her eyes were full of tears. Then, a bit embarrassed, she told me it was her ex. He had a problem and she hoped they’d soon find a treatment for him. They had broken up and he had gone crazy. He phoned her at all hours, night and day. He wouldn’t leave her alone. I could see that Michela was frightened. She’s been in a coma for two years now. Vegetative state. They say he beat her into that state with a heavy stick.

Pendant l’examen de maths, elle m’a laissé copié tout son devoir. Elle me connaissait à peine, mais quand elle a vu que j’étais paniquée, elle m’a fait passer les réponses sans sourciller. Michèle est une des filles les plus intelligentes que j’ai jamais rencontrée. Elle est intuitive, précise, elle comprend tout naturellement. Le côté sympa, c’est qu’elle a pas la grosse tête. Elle te met à l’aise même si, visiblement, tu n’es pas à son niveau. Une fois, après le cours, elle a reçu un appel bizarre. Elle a écouté en silence, et elle avait les larmes aux yeux quand elle a raccroché. Puis, un peu gênée, elle m’a dit que c’était son ex. Il avait eu un problème et elle espérait qu’on lui trouverait bientôt un traitement. Il était devenu fou depuis qu’ils s‘étaient quittés. Il la cherchait constamment et il la harcelait. Je voyais bien que Michèle avait peur. Ca fait deux ans aujourd’hui qu’elle est dans un coma végétatif. Il paraît que c’est lui qui l’a mise dans cet état en la tabassant avec un bâton.
